History of American Legion Building

Jerry Brearton submitted this history about the American Legion Post 328 building, 306 E. Main Street, Morrison, IL.

Close to three years ago, members of Morrison American Legion embarked on a work project to make a kitchen, out of a room with a mop sink and a 240 outlet for an oven. This was by working only a few hours on Monday nights, with mostly elderly members, between the icy winters, and during COVID-19.

The building used to be a meat locker. We had to go through a wall that was close to a foot thick (due to layers and layers of various type of insulation.) The space was enlarged to make it an L-shaped kitchen.

We still had some energy and some money remaining from a cashed-in CD. We embarked on the bathroom, to enlarge it and add some amenities (shower, baby changing station, hot water, etc.)

Morrison City Council decided to include the Legion block in the remaining Main Street upgrade. Due to street construction and a dump truck catching some electrical wires, our Post had a small fire, with a lot of smoke in the attic and whole building. Fortunately, the construction company’s insurance covered all remaining repairs.

Therefore, this year on Monday, May 30 2022, we considered our normally little, Memorial Day Open House, to be our Grand Re-Opening Open House.
