2024 Cross Walk and Holy Week

2024 Holy Week Services are listed below for 15 Morrison, IL, churches.  Holy Week is from Palm Sunday, March 24, through Easter Sunday, March 31.  Know that each Church welcomes new, lapsed, and long-time residents–as well as visitors–to attend their services.

On Good Friday, March 29, the annual ecumenical Community Cross Walk begins at Resthave Rehabilitation & Health Care, 408 Maple Avenue, at 12:15 p.m.  Community participants should arrive before that time and park their vehicles.  After this service, those who do not wish to walk a half mile to Pleasant View Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, 500 N. Jackson Street, may ride a bus. Likewise, about 12:50 p.m., the bus will return participants to Resthave.

Inside Resthave on the Nursing side, Morrison United Methodist Church Pastor Sun-ah Kang will give a brief Easter message.  Brethren in Christ Pastor Craig and Kathi Sipes will lead the group in hymn singing.  Walkers then progress north on Jackson Street to Pleasant View Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, where Church of St. Anne-Episcopal Father James Brzezinski will speak in the Cafeteria.  The public is invited to
1. attend either or both short services at these residential care facilities
2. walk with others
3. help carry the cross for awhile
4. contemplate the procession.

Morrison Ministers Council arranges the annual Community Cross Walk.

*Bethesda Lutheran Church, 301 W. South Street, will hold a 9:00 a.m., March 24, Palm Sunday ritual, beginning with the “Blessing of the Palms” in the Fellowship Room and then processing into the sanctuary, while singing “All Glory, Laud, and Honor.” Holy Communion will be celebrated. A potluck breakfast will follow at 10:30. The Maundy Thursday, March 28, service with Holy Communion is at 7:00 p.m. Included is a symbolic stripping of the altar/chancel space, symbolizing Christ being stripped of his power and handed to his captors. Sanctuary lights will be dimmed; scripture will be read; the service ends in silence. On March 29, Good Friday worship at 7:00 p.m. is a contemplative service focusing on the cross.  Easter Morning worship, Sunday, March 31, is at 9:00 a.m.; it includes Holy Communion and special music by the Senior Choir. Light refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Room.

*Brethren in Christ Church, 209 E. Knox Street, will hold a Maundy Thursday, March 28, Foot Washing Service at 6:00 p.m., with Holy Communion offered, followed by a free dinner at 6:45.  All are welcome to attend.  On Good Friday, March 29, Pastor Craig and Kathi Sipes and some members will participate in the community Cross Walk. Easter Sunday, March 31, begins with an outside Sonrise message by Eric Sipes at 6:00 a.m.; it will move indoors if case of bad weather.  A potluck brunch follows at 9:30.  At 10:30 the inside Resurrection service will include local music.  There will be an Easter Egg Hunt for children afterwards.

*Church of Saint Anne-Episcopal, 401 N. Cherry Street, on Palm Sunday, March 24, offers at 8:00 a.m. Liturgy of the Palms and Low Mass; at 9:30 Liturgy of the Palms and Mass with music.  On Wednesday, March 27, there is Low Mass at 5:30 p.m.  On Maundy Thursday, March 28, there is Mass at 5:30 with music.  The Watch begins after Mass. On Good Friday, March 29, at 9:00 a.m. The Watch ends with Stations of the Cross. [Editor’s note: The Community Cross Walk begins at Resthave Care & Rehabilitation, 408 Maple Avenue, at 12:15 p.m.] At 5:30 p.m., Veneration of the Cross includes Mass of the Pre-Sanctified.  On Saturday, March 30, The Great Vigil of Easter, the 5:30 p.m. service begins with The Lighting of the New Fire. On Easter Day, The Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, Sunday, March 31, there is 8:00 a.m. Low Mass; 9:30 a.m. Mass with Music.

*Crossroads Community Church, will celebrate Easter worship service in its new location at 300 W. South Street, (formerly Morrison Christian Reformed Church) on Easter Sunday, March 31, are from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Multiple  Baptisms will take place.  Contact Jon Eastlick at 815-908-9367 regarding a Baptism.  Refreshments will be served.

*Ebenezer Reformed Church, 309 E. Park Street, on Palm Sunday, March 24, at 9:30 a.m., will have children parade with palms in the sanctuary.  On Maundy Thursday, March 28, the 7:00 p.m. combined service at Emmanuel Church (202 E. Morris Street) will include Holy Communion.  Members might participate in the Community Cross Walk on Good Friday, March 29, beginning at Resthave Rehabilitation & Health Care, 408 Maple Avenue, at noon.  Father James Brzezinski and Pastor Sun-ah Kang will deliver the messages. A Good Friday, March 29, Funeral Service for Christ is at 6:00 p.m.  The Easter Transformation service is at 9:30 a.m. on March 31.

*Emmanuel Reformed Church, 202 E. Morris Street, will hold a Maundy Thursday service, at 7:00 p.m. on March 28, which includes Holy Communion.  On Easter Sunday, March 31, worship service is at 9:00 a.m.  Featured music will be by Exhaltation Praise Team and the Sanctuary Choir. Coffee hour will follow.

*First Presbyterian Church of Morrison, 100 E. Lincolnway, will hold all Holy Week in-person services and via live-streaming.  Palm Sunday, March 24, includes processing with palms in the sanctuary. Maundy Thursday service is March 28, at 7:00 p.m., with Holy Communion.  There is a 7:00 p.m., March 29, Good Friday service.  The March 31, Easter Sunday service is at 10:15 a.m.  View services live on https://www.facebook.com/firstpresmorrison.

*Kingdom Life Community Church, 11429 Ward Road, Easter service is on Sunday, April 9, at 10:00 a.m.; Holy Communion is available.  A Nursery is available for infants to 3-year-olds.  Children’s Church is available for ages 4 to second grade, who will be dismissed during the Easter service.

*Morrison Christian Church, 201 S. Genesee Street, will hold a potluck at 10:00 a.m., on Palm Sunday, March 24. The congregation will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, March 31, at 10:00 a.m.  Holy Communion will be offered.

*Morrison First Baptist Church, 406 Maple Avenue, celebrates Palm Sunday, March 24, at 10:00 a.m. The Easter Sunday, March 31, service is at 10:00 a.m.

*Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. Lincolnway, will accommodate all who come to worship.  On Palm Sunday, March 24, children and adults will process through the sanctuary carrying palms. On Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Tenebrae service, which focuses on Scripture readings and hymns related to the Last Supper. Easter Sunday, March 31, begins with a light brunch from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Children will have an Easter egg hunt during the adult worship service at 9:00 a.m. After the service, there will be an egg hunt for children and adults, in Heritage Hall.

*Our Savior Lutheran Church-LCMS, 21496 Hazel Road, Maundy Thursday, March 28, service and Holy Communion begin at 7:00 p.m.  Easter Sunday service, March 31, is at 9:00 a.m.  Coffee and treats follow.

*St. Mary Catholic Church, 13320 Garden Plain Road, will celebrate Palm Sunday, March 24, with members processing in the sanctuary. On March 28, the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper is at 6:00 p.m., followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Good Friday, March 29, offers a Solemn Liturgical Service of the Passion at 2:00 p.m.  Holy Saturday Easter Vigil Mass, on March 30, is at 7:30 p.m.  Easter Sunday Resurrection of the Lord Mass, March 31, begins at 9:00 a.m.  On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, Holy Hour and The Divine Mercy Chaplet begins at 2:00 p.m., with confessions from 2:05 to 2:40. Benediction will follow. Holy Communion is offered at all Masses.

*St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church LC-MS, 601 N. Jackson Street, at 10:45 a.m., on Palm Sunday, March 24, the congregation will process with palms; the children’s choir will sing. On March 28, Maundy Thursday, there will be a Lord’s Supper service at 7:00 p.m.  Included is Stripping of the Altar, symbolically representing Christ being stripped of his power and handed over to his captors.  Holy Communion will be celebrated.  Good Friday service is March 29, at 7:00 p.m.  On Easter Sunday, March 31, the Sunrise service is at 7:00 a.m., followed by breakfast from 8:15 to 9:15.  There is also a 9:30 service with Holy Communion. The choir will sing.

*Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road, at 9:30 a.m. on Palm Sunday, March 24, will hold a procession of palms. All are welcome to the Maundy Thursday service, which includes Holy Communion, and a Seder Meal on March 28. The Easter Sunday, March 31, Resurrection service is at 9:30 a.m.
