On July 22, 1989, a Civil War reenactment of the Battle of Monacacy in Maryland took place. A formation of Union infantry moves forward to attack a Confederate position.
This particular battle–which was technically a Union loss–delayed Confederate forces in their planned attack on Washington, DC, long enough for Union reinforcements to arrive and save the Capitol. It was significant, also, because no future Confederate attack was directed at the Nations’ Capitol.
