The Morrison Ponies entered the championship game Wednesday at the Erie Junior Varsity Tournament against Bureau Valley with hopes of bringing home the gold after a busy week of action.
The game was a constant swing of momentum as Morrison jumped out to a 12-5 first quarter lead behind an aggressive 1-2-2 zone. The constant ball pressure kept the Storm on their heels.
Bureau Valley adjusts their attack and Morrison didn’t find the scorebook until only 1:56 was left in the half and the half ended with the Storm leading 19-14.
The third quarter saw the lead stretch to eight points before an energized group of reserves led by Kyle McCoy’s two steals cut the lead to two and the starters returned with approximately four minutes left in regular play. Tristin houzenga made a three with 46.4 seconds to cut the lead to two and Kaleb Church forced up a shot from among a group of defenders that fell with 5.3 seconds to tie and it appeared an overtime would be needed to settle this championship game.
Bureau Valley in bounded under the Morrison full court pressure and advanced the ball across the midcourt line as the clock wound down. Sophomore Gage Smith was forced to throw a twenty-five footer off balance shot that hit the rim and backboard at the same time and took an awkward spin and dropped through the net as the horn sounded for the Storm win… 32-29.
