WHOAshirtRound two voting is now open.  White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center (WHOA) is in competition with other non-profit entities for a second time.  The goal is to win a much-needed, office technology makeover, valued at up to $15,000.  Previously, the local organization was in the final five contenders, but in the Orange Zone, they compete in a region with much larger populations than Whiteside County, IL.

Viewers of thecity1.com around the world can strengthen WHOA’s chances, by voting every day and from every personal device:  computer, tablet, and smartphone.  Voting is open through Monday, August 11, 2014, at 5:00 p.m.  Start today!  Ask your family members, social groups, and colleagues to vote on all their devices at  http://www.rkdixon.com/mmnprb/Pages/TopVotes.aspx.

Classes are held at the home of Harold and Mary Scuffham, 12433 Prairie Center Road, Morrison, IL.  Begun in 1995, Mary stated WHOA “has no technology owned by the organization.”  It uses a computer and printer/copier owned by its members, hence, the importance of the “Make My Non-Profit Run Better” contest to WHOA.

“We run on 40 volunteers who help with classes and fundraising.  There are two very part-time instructors and one very part-time marketing” person, with seven volunteer Board Members.

What makes WHOA unique?  It offers therapeutic horseback riding and animal-assisted activities, as well as other related services, for children and adults with disabilities.  The organization has been associated with the Equine Assisted Activities (EAA), which is known for beneficial forms of exercise and recreation for people with a wide variety of disabilities.

What does WHOA offer?  It combines goals, sports, recreation, therapy, and education in once-a-week lessons, which run from April to October.  Day and evening hours are available.  Lessons include basic instructions of grooming, horsemanship, tracking, riding, and/or driving skills.  Every lesson is taught by PATH certified instructors.
