On Tuesday, December 3, 2013, the Morrison High School Mustang Wrestling squad opened their season against the Oregon Hawks and the Dixon Dukes. The Mustangs started a little slow, losing the first two matches of the night. From there, however, it was all Mustangs, scoring 57 unanswered points and logging six pins along the way.
Next up, the Mustangs open their Conference schedule in the MHS gymnasium on Thursday, December 5, against Princeton and defending Conference Champs, Erie/Prophetstown. Matches will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Junior standout, returning Sectional Qualifier, Austin Shoup (195 lbs) got things rolling with a pin, followed by two more pins registered by Parker Zickert (220) and Tyler Todd (285.) After three forfeits for the Mustangs, Phoenix Parks (120) had to grind out a 6-2 decision. To round out the winning for the Mustangs, the Keller brothers, Austin (152) and Dylan (132), as well as Hunter Ferguson collected their first pins of the season.
In the next match against Dixon, the wrestlers picked up right where they left off. The team’s lone senior, Tom Kohl (182) set the tone with a major over the Duke wrestler. Next up, Austin Shoup collected a major of his own, followed by two more pins from the big men, Zickert and Todd. The Mustangs would drop a match at 113 lbs before freshman Ethan Fischbach earned a pin at 126 lbs. The Mustangs dropped the next two matches before Austin Keller (152) rolled into his second pin of the night, capping the evening.
Morrison Varsity defeated Oregon 57-16.
