The Magic Owl Children’s Theatre at Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP) presents an hour-long version of “Seussical,” a musical based on the books of Dr. Seuss, Friday, August 9, and Saturday, August 10, at 11:00 a.m. TLP is located at 8215 Black Oak Road in rural Mount Carroll, IL. Tickets are $6 and are available at the box office, by calling 815-244-2035 or visiting www.timberlakeplayhouse.org. “Seussical the Musical” tells the story of Horton the elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, and The Cat in The Hat. The show is appropriate for all ages.

Resthave Retirement and Nursing Home, 408 Maple Avenue, will hold their annual “Back to School Fashion Show” on Friday, August 9, at 2:00 p.m. Join our residents as we see what styles the kids are wearing to school this year.  Call 815-772-4021 for more information.

Cruise on over to DQ Grill & Chill, 200 N. Sawyer Road, for The Morrison Car Show, Friday, August 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There is no entry fee. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors are encouraged to register.  Everyone is invited for some nostalgia, as you view these classic vehicles, while cooling off with an ice cream treat. Shop the Huge Rummage Sale in Morrison Saturday, August 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. Lincolnway, returns to the Lincoln Highway Buy-Way with a rummage sale with many odds and ends, glassware, etc. Plus, stop for lunch with walking tacos, cookies, and water. The walking tacos come highly recommended!

Fairhaven Fruit Farm is now open for the season. The weather has been great, and the abundance of delicious apples shows it. Just a short drive north of Morrison off of Route 78 onto Fairhaven Road, visit Tom and Genevieve Nedbal’s orchard and store and stock up on apples, honey, and caramel. They are open Wednesday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Visit www.fairhavefruitfarm.com for more information.

Registrations will still be accepted for the Strides for Students 5k Run/Walk, Saturday, August 10, at Morrison-Rockwood State Park. The race starts at 8:00 a.m., and all proceeds go to the Morrison Schools Foundation. There will be awards for overall male and female and 1st-3rd male and female in each age group. There is a special award for top male and female Morrison High School alumni. Walkers are encouraged to participate. Registration is $20. Register online at www.getmeregistered.com or print off a registration form. The race is sponsored by the Morrison High School Class of 1993, in an effort to give back to Morrison Schools.

The Wildman mud run will be postponed due to an insufficient number of registrants to execute the race properly and to its fullest potential. However, we would like to keep the lines of communication open as we “regroup” and look forward to a spring/summer 2014 launch of the Wildman. The 143rd annual Whiteside County Fair returns to Morrison from Tuesday, August 13, through Saturday, August 17. The evening grandstand entertainment kicks off with professional bull riding on Tuesday night. Hell Drivers Stunt Driving Thrill Show and the Cal Stage Band round out the evening entertainment, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Friday night the tractor and truck pull takes over the grandstand. The Fair ends Saturday with harness racing at 1:00 p.m. and the crowd-pleasing demo derby at 6:30 p.m. Demo derby tickets are $5 and must be purchased in person at the Treasurer’s Office, which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 5, and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 6, to Friday, August 9. All other grandstand events are included with the price of admission, which is $7 a day or $15 for the week, for ages 12 and older; $1 a day or $3 for the week for ages 6 to 11. Daily free events include the Grandpa Cratchet Stage shows, a daily children’s bicycle giveaway, Bingo, and LogHoggers Chain Saw Sculpting.  Mega Bands for the Wilson Family Rides carnival that allow fairgoers to ride any ride, any day, any time the carnival is open, are $45 BEFORE the Fair starts at the Secretary’s Office, or $50 during Fair week on the Midway. All exhibit buildings are open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day; they close for good at 6:00 p.m., Saturday. Go to whitesidecountyfair.org for a complete schedule and more information.

System Award Management Government Contract Training will be held on Wednesday, August 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the IL PTAC Office, 4703 16th Street, Suite G, Moline, IL. This SAM training is to help you understand and prepare to successfully register or re-register your business for government contracting. The newly migrated system (formally known as CCR) is now required. You will learn about the new system and will include information on ORCA and SBA sub net directory to properly register or re-register your business. Cost to attend is $69 and lunch will be included in registration fee. Seating is limited so register early.
