Wesley C. “Smitty” Smith, 92, of Prophetstown, IL, formerly of Lyndon, IL, died Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at Allure of Prophetstown.
Wesley was born October 20, 1927, to Harvey F. and Iola (Halligan) Smith, in Canoe Creek Township in Rock Island County, IL. He was educated in the Hillsdale Grade Schools and was a graduate of Erie High School. He married Opal Jensen-Kuelper on March 24, 1975, in Morrison, IL. She died October 5, 2019. Wesley owned and operated the Owl Tap in Lyndon. He first was employed by Volckmann’s Furniture and General Electric, both in Morrison. Wesley was an avid pool player and bowler. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and being along the river. He also enjoyed traveling with his family. Wesley had a great sense of humor and could easily make people laugh.
Survivors include daughters, Cynthia (Jerry) VanderLeest and Christine Smith-Proud, both of Morrison; son, Dale (Mary) Smith of Sterling, IL; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; step-daughters, Kim Ingram of Prophetstown and Debra Kuelper of Wisconsin; step-sons, Steve Kuelper of Prophetstown and David (Mel) Kuelper of Buda, IL; several step-grand- and great-grandchildren; niece, Marilee Mueller; nephew, Rocky Adler; sister, Mary Anne (James) Snyder of Moline, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal; sister, Marjorie Lee Brown; brother, Darrell F. Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the Lyndon Township Cemetery in Lyndon, IL, with Pastor Justin Vogel of River Church, Clinton, IA, officiating.
There will be no visitation.
