Two water projects began Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16, 2013, that will be completed this month. Gary Tresenriter, Director of Public Services/Acting City Administrator, said two more would begin the week of July 22. Tests will be made on the water tower, to see its reaction to future work, and on Well #5.
Layne Christensen Company of Aurora, IL, pulled into Morrison, IL, on Monday, July 15, setting up heavy equipment on the hill at Kelly Park, above E. High Street. Their mission? To extract the outdated pump, motor, and column pipe from Well #4. Tresenriter stated the “pump has been in the ground 20 years.”
The crane above lifts a section of column pipe that was severed into manageable length. On the ground behind the Well House lay 19 other sections. A crew member stated “about 25” sections likely would be removed, totaling 555 feet. The removal began Monday and continued Tuesday, at 7:00 a.m. The new pipes, below, will be installed Wednesday, July 17.
On the south side of town, City of Morrison Public Services employees began demolition of a 30′ tall, white rocket air stripper. The area will be backfilled and seeded afterward. Tresenriter said, “It will be[come] a future sledding hill.”
A section of column pipe has been in the ground 20 years. The pump and motor will be pulled; replacements will come from the 2008 Well #3. These have been refurbished. The older pump and motor will be salvaged as a spare set.
Wednesday afternoon, July 17, workers excavated a portion of Winfield Street, centered between Genesee and Orange Streets. A new, 15-foot water service, ie., pipe, would soon be connected to the water main, replacing a damaged one held by Mike Garland. Part of the hole is visible at the top of the photo. He estimated it to be 60 to 70 years old.
Matt Lancaster, left, and Scott Strobbe were extracting muddy clay from the work site with the City’s heavy-duty Vactor. Water pressure softened the clay. Wearing appropriate foot gear, Drew Blean, prepared to enter the hole.
