City Administrator Brian Melton has a straightforward message for those who “ride” on downtown sidewalks. “Stop doing that.”
New, yellow sidewalk signage indicates this.
Downtown Main Street–stretching from Madison to Orange Street–is a certified Historic District. It is also a Sidewalk Pedestrian Zone.
An Ordinance prohibits sidewalk riding of unicycles, bicycles, and tricycles; scooters and skateboards; roller skates; motorized recreational equipment.
Likewise, there can be no riding on access ramps at intersections.
Note: Bicycles may be ridden on the street, and riders must follow all laws.
Melton explained, “We don’t want people to be struck, as they walk out of a building.”
