The Volunteer Millers at de Immigrant Windmill in Fulton, IL, will host their October program on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Windmill Cultural Center, 111 Tenth Avenue in Fulton. The Cultural Center is located across the street from the city’s authentic Dutch Windmill. “Birds and Bergs, 24 Years of Avian Research in Greenland,” will be presented by Kurt Burnham, D. Phil., founder of the High Arctic Institute.
Dr. Burnham is the President and CEO of the High Arctic Institute. He grew up in the outdoors and traveled extensively around the world. Kurt visited conservations and research projects throughout the third world with his father, former president of The Peregrine Fund, Dr. William Burnham.
Kurt first visited Greenland in 1991. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Albertson’s College of Idaho in 1997. Upon graduating Kurt began working for “The Peregrine Fund” managing their Greenland Project. In 2003, he was appointed as their Arctic Projects Director. In the fall of 2006 Kurt created the High Arctic Institute, and in 2008 received his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. His research focused on Peregrine and Gyrfalcon populations in Greenland. Kurt has conducted field research in Greenland every summer since 1991, spending nearly three combined years of his life in Greenland. His presentation on October 22nd will focus on Peregrines and Gyrfalcons along with a number of other bird species found in Greenland.
