Vogel Cut-a-Thon Elicits Outpouring of Support

Posted by

Take note of the generous people around town with new haircuts.

Cosmetologists from seven local salons devised a two-day opportunity for the community to offer financial support to barber Tommy Vogel, on Monday, November 10, and Tuesday, November 11, 2014.  Vogel is recuperating from heart surgery but remains hospitalized in the Quad Cities.

Taking two-hour turns from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., his female peers cut hair at Vogel’s Barber Shop, 205 E. Main Street, Morrison, IL.  The town came in large numbers to participate in the event.

Cut-a-Thon organizer Charla Olson reported chairs were filled nearly the entire time, with many standing in wait.   She estimated the women performed eight-to-ten cuts per hour both days.

Callie Bush, top, completes a trim on six-year-old Jaxon, son of Dr. Bradley R. (Elizabeth) Yaklich.  Below, Brandy Darby trims Dr. John Tomasino, Jr., while her son, Dawson, age 9, waits in the background.  Both women are employed at Extreme Image Salon, 207 W. Main.

Evan Haag had suggested seeking sponsorship from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Whiteside County Chapter #31115.  Dale Eizenga submitted the paperwork and secured a matching donation for the first $500.

The Bake “Sale” on Tuesday, November 11, likewise was well-supported.  Items were offered without prices.  Only two candy bar buckets remained late that afternoon.  Shellie Tiesman organized the Bake Sale.  Olson reported over $3000 was received!

“It was beyond everything we anticipated,” remarked Eizenga.
