Congresswoman Cheri Bustos issued the following statement, on Friday, July 24, 2020, in response to President Donald Trump’s comment Thursday, that the phase one China trade deal now “means much less.”
In response to a question during a press briefing President Trump stated, “Speaking about China, the trade deal means less to me now than it did…It just means much less to me, can you understand that? It just means much less to me.”
Congresswoman Bustos stated, “Trump’s erratic and short-sighted trade policies have levied a steep cost, and it’s our producers and their families who are ultimately paying the price. When President Trump was candidate Trump, he stood behind a podium and promised to end the war on our farmers….They have endured financial uncertainty, declining market shares, and a precarious outlook. Yesterday, the President again stood behind a podium and told our farmers that their future ‘means much less’ to him.
“The President’s comments were a slap in the face to the American farmer.”
