True Value and You Can Help WHOA

xmassaleYoungsters have completed and likely revised their Christmas requests to Santa Claus.  Likewise, a pair of lists has been generated by three women, to fulfill the needs–not wants–of White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center, know as WHOA.  The deadline for filling WHOA’s wishes is Saturday, January 10, 2015.

The group-participation initiative began with advocates Kendra Kophamer and Tawny Wiersema.  After brainstorming with Kay Richmond, the WHOA board gave its approval to seek public assistance of donated items purchased locally.  The sign on the door to Morrison True Value Hardware, 104 S. Genesee Street, Morrison, IL, indicates how local shoppers can meaningfully support the mission of this unique local asset.

The process was very thoughtful and prudent, citing only things that are needed for the center’s operation and beneficial to its function.  White Oaks was established for the purpose of providing recreational, educational, therapeutic, and social opportunities for persons with disabilities.  Those aged four to adult may participate in the activities, from April through September.  They offer equine assisted and equine animal activities and therapeutic horse riding.  Call 815-772-2669 for information or visit rideatwhoa.org.

True Value has posted a WHOA “wish list” of 35 remaining items.  Choose something at a price point that suits your budget.  Prices range from $0.88 for a roll of electrical tape, to $49.99 for a 4′ fiberglass ladder.  Staff will guide you to the items.

At these low costs, the entire family might choose a present to donate.  There are brooms, light bulbs, trash bags, salt to melt ice, padlocks, and batteries, for example.  Buy a radio or flashlight; a rake or snow shovel.

“It’s a very worthy cause,” added Linda Brandon, employee at the hardware store.  “More equipment-related items” are on the Farm & Fleet list.

Visit any Farm & Fleet store and ask for the fundraiser list under the name of Tawny Wiersema.  The stores require an individual’s name, rather than the organization, WHOA.
