Lions Club members participated in Candy Day weekend on Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10.  Thank you for the support from community members and local businesses.  Members also joined in the Homecoming Parade, with some riding in the “Lion Mobile” and Leo the Lion and other members walking.  The Leo is loved by all ages and kept beat with the little dancers in front of our unit.  Members also completed the service project of cleaning the IL Route 30 highway east of Morrison, IL, filling those bright orange garbage bags.  A contribution to Oversight (formerly Illinois Eye Bank) was made.  Oversight provides many services, including cornea transplants.

Flora Stralow, left below, introduced the program speaker, Past District Governor Judy Shaw, center.  She was accompanied by Past District Governor Duane Shaw, right, and their adopted Black Lab, Hachi.  Originally Hachi was training to be a leader dog.  Due to a physical problem, he was unable to complete the program and ultimately offered for adoption.  An informative presentation described the beginning of the Leader Dog School in Rochester Hills, MI.

LeaderDog

The school started with three people and dogs that were obtained from shelters and pounds.  Today, the center breeds and raises their own dogs, that are mainly Black or Golden Labs.  Puppies are given to puppy raisers for their first year, where they learn social skills and being out in public.  They are returned to the school, where trainers work with them, and ultimately are matched with clients.  Clients and the dogs go through a 26-day training period.  Clients receive the free dog along with free transportation, food, and lodging.  Currently the school is undergoing renovation and has raised over $13 million for remodeling the facility.  It is working on the final million.  It will be a state-of-the-art facility when renovation is complete.

New member Michelle Roberts, at left with sponsor Stralow, was inducted by Past District Governor Shaw.  The club welcomes anyone wishing to know more about Lions to come to any of our meetings on the first or third Tuesday of each month at Happy Joe’s, 109 W. Main Street, Morrison.  Visit the club’s website noted above to learn more about the local club.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 3.  Jim Winslow is in charge of the program.
