Meeting in regular session, the Thomson Depot Museum Committee discussed the upcoming gala celebration for May 28, 2022. Tentative plans were formulated to celebrate in conjunction with the Thomson Alumni Association’s 125th anniversary in 2022. This is also the 50th year since the Thomson High School Basketball team went to State!
A theme was discussed, encompassing all of the athletic and school activities over the years. Plans for a Softball, Basketball, and an overall fan theme incorporating the celebration with the Alumni Banquet, met with enthusiastic support. Clint Stiles, School Exhibit Coordinator, assured the Committee that the new exhibit will be ready for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 28, 2022.
Other plans include a “Celebration of Life and Tribute” to the many workers for the Depot Museum; the Chordbusters Barbershop Chorus from the Quad Cities; a possible speaker; a 3-on-3 or free throw Basketball tournament in the Village Park; a possible Softball tournament in Curley Park. The Firemen have expressed interest in a pork chop stand to benefit the Iben Scholarship. Other plans include a possible reuniting of Band members to perform the school song and former Chorus members to present musical memories. The Library will possibly have a special exhibit. Everyone is asked to start preparing for a Purple and Gold weekend.
In other action, the Committee learned of a possible COVID-19 State grant to repair the eaves and help with the new exhibit. A matching fundraiser for the exhibit, together with the Lewis Frosch Memorial Fund, will provide ongoing funds to insure the perpetuity of the museum.
The Committee is sending appreciation notes to those who have donated. They expressly gave appreciation to Les Mitchell and Babe Tipton, who maintained weed control and mowing this summer. Volunteers are always welcome!
