Thomson Depot Day–Outhouse Races and Art in the Park

The annual Thomson, IL, Depot Day celebration takes place Saturday, June 20, 2015.  It will be 150 times more fun, as the Village of Thomson celebrates its Sesquicentennial anniversary.  Area residents and visitors can partake of these events.

Outhouse Team Races

outhouseRaceOuthouse races featuring “artfully displayed houses of necessity” will take center stage as the Thomson Sesquicentennial sponsored by the Thomson Chamber of Commerce presents Depot Day on June 20, 2105.

Contestants vying for the coveted Golden Plunger will commence their race for the gold on Market Street and Main and shall convey their cargo north to Walnut Street and back. Judges will check for proper maintenance and ease of motion. Second place winners will receive the pseudo-Olympic Silver roll of toilet paper, and third place takes home the Bronze roll. Not to be left out, last place winners will be awarded corn cobs.

Fun for all, and everyone is a winner!

There is still room for more contestants. Contact Luanne at 815-259-3168 for details or pick up entry forms at the Village Hall. The main rules require that there must be a five person team-four pushers and one sitter; any material can be used, but the outhouse must be intact at the end of the race and must be at least nine square feet; the outhouse must have a door or curtain and a proper sitting throne.

outhouseRace2Staging and check-in begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, and the first heat will take place at 11:30. The Committee wishes to challenge all village public works of Carroll County and the suburbs of Thomson to show their “treatment skill” and enter this once-in-a-Sesquicentennial race! Public participation is encouraged. Day-of-race registration is welcome. Come out to Depot Day and share in the fun!

 

 

 

 

Art in the Park Features Local Talent

Dresden artistLocal artists will be showcased in Depot Day’s Art in the Park event, scheduled form 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on June 20. Artists will display their talents in the park adjacent to the Thomson Library. A variety of art media will be shown, from crafts such as woodworking and fabric arts, to drawing, watercolor, and acrylic paintings. Jewelry and handwork, including crochet and custom-made aprons, will be on display and available for purchase.

Several members of the Palisades Art League will set up easels and paint as passers-by observe their technique.

Space is still available for artists to set up tables, but all covered space has been reserved. If you wish to participate and have your own table and/or tent, please contact Jan Bristol at 815-297-3135.   No vendor fee is required.
