Programs for the 61st season of Clinton Symphony Orchestra (CSO) have been announced by Conductor and Music Director Brian Dollinger, shown below, beginning his eighth season with the orchestra. His emphasis for the season is on hearing and seeing live music performances. Season tickets are available now, and solicitation for the orchestra’s annual fund is in progress.
The season for the 55-member orchestra opens the weekend of October 11, 2014, and includes a cello soloist, a student soloist from an area high school, and performing ensembles from within the orchestra and from the area.
The season will open in Sterling High School Centennial Auditorium, E. Miller Road at Fourth Avenue, Sterling, IL, Saturday, October 11, with music from Austria, Italy, France, and England. The program will be repeated the following afternoon, Sunday, October 12, in the new Central Performing Arts Center, Central High School, 519 E. 11th Street, in DeWitt, IA. Featured will be cello soloist Timothy Archbold, a native of Australia, now living and working in the Midwest. He will play the cello concerto by Edward Elgar with the orchestra.
Members of the orchestra will perform music written for small ensembles on the afternoon of Sunday, November 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, 439 Third Avenue South, in Clinton, IA. They will choose from the vast repertoire of music written for from-three-to-ten musicians, usually composed for a small group of friends and performed in a more intimate setting.
The traditional Holiday Concert of the Symphony will be performed Saturday, December 13, in Vernon Cook Theater at Clinton High School, 817 8th Avenue South, Clinton. Along with seasonal favorites, the orchestra invites other area ensembles to participate in the festive program. The concert traditionally closes with a carol sing-along.
The orchestra will choose an area high school musician from the annual Young Artist Auditions in January 2015 to perform a solo piece with the orchestra, for the concert on Saturday, February 28, in the Morrison High School Auditorium, 643 Genesee Avenue, Morrison, IL. This annual event honors both student musicians and music educators in this area. In addition to the Young Artist, the orchestra will perform music of Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak. Brahms was instrumental in promoting the music and career of Dvorak.
To close the regular season, Dollinger has programmed three “No. 3” selections: Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3, Haydn’s Symphony No. 3, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3. The sequence follows the development of the symphonic form. This final concert will be performed Saturday, April 11, in Vernon Cook Theater at Clinton High School, 817 8th Avenue South, Clinton.
A brochure of all season events has been mailed to regular patrons. It offers season tickets as well as an opportunity to contribute to the orchestra’s annual fund. The same information is available
