Morrison High School Student Council has a long-standing tradition of supporting the fight against cancer. Over the last ten years, the Student Council has raised thousands of dollars and attended several Relay for Life events. This year MHS joined other local schools in “Crazy for the Cure.” Morrison High Schoolers raised $1198.27. Student Council will make an additional donation, bringing the amount raised to an even $1300.
This year’s effort was a multifaceted and combined effort. Students’ 6th hour classes competed in a Jar Wars event, which raised $734.92. To compete in Jar Wars, students add silver money to the jars of their competitors and pennies to their own jar. Silver money is counted negatively, while the pennies go toward a class total. In this way students can “sabotage” other classes’ totals, while raising money for a good cause. Mrs. Rickertsen’s sixth hour Senior English class came in first place, winning a pizza party provided by Student Council.
Tye-dyed t-shirts were sold throughout the week. Many students wore these to the Boys’ Basketball game on Friday, January 29, 2016. Student Council members baked their favorite sweet treats and held a two-day bake sale. They also allocated the funds from the concessions on Thursday, January 28, to their “Crazy for the Cure” effort.
Student Council members, left-to-right, include Allyssa Renner, Tessa Vander Bleek, Kaleb McCoy, and Andy Bird. Customer Derek Bush joined them at the January 28 concession stand.
