As the activities within the Morrison School District remained under COVID-19 restrictions, some signs of a return to normal were present in the High School, Friday night, February 19, 2021.
A normal Friday night would be a full gymnasium of local fans watching their sons, nephews, grandsons, neighbors, and friends with fellow students protecting the proud Morrison name and tradition on the basketball floor. However, the COVI-19 pandemic has forced most signs of “normal” traditions to be shelved. Only this month have student athletes been allowed again to compete. They do so with many restrictions.
Opening games were played without any audience, regardless of relationships, until this week. Two family members per player (home teams only) would be allowed into the MHS gymnasium. That restriction was expanded on Friday, February 19, when Cheerleaders were allowed to organize spirited chants from a corner of the bleachers, as long as they were socially distanced.
Additional restrictions were flexed as the Morrison Pons were allowed to perform a half-time routine. Cheerleaders and the parents of the cheering performers were allowed in to watch, if they departed following the performance.
It was not a familiar situation, but a move toward acknowledging the efforts of students. It reminded them of the importance that school spirit places in the health of the school, community, and the memories of each Cheerleader or Pon Squad member.
Patience seems to be the word of these times. Morrison Community School District #6 students are to be congratulated and commended for their compliance and willingness to continue their educational and athletic climb. The world adjusts in its attempt to return life to some level of familiarity for all.
