WC Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week by Keeping It Green

4-H youth from across the nation will be “Keeping It Green” as they celebrate 2008 National 4-H Week October 5-11 by raising awareness about environmental issues and initiating environmental projects that make a positive difference in their communities. Whiteside County 4-H members ask their community to get ready for the challenge by joining 4-H and helping make that positive difference in Whiteside County.

Throughout National 4-H week and the year, 4-H’ers solve problems in their communities, raise awareness about environmental issues, and make a difference for their futures in the spirit of 4-H’s vision to create a world in which youth and adults learn, grow, and work together as catalysts for positive change. In Whiteside County, more than 250 4-H members and 70 volunteers are actively involved in 4-H.

During National 4-H Week Whiteside County 4-H members will be designing window displays, designing and delivering cookies boxes full of cookies for local 4-H Supporters and kicking the week off with the Fall Drive Thru BBQ on Thursday, October 2, 2008.

"4-H has impacted my life in more ways than I could possibly imagine. I am not the normal 4-Her. I don't live in the country and I don't show livestock. Instead I have learned skills that I will need later on in life and I have met the most amazing people. 4-H is an incredible program that all children throughout the county should be involved in," said Whiteside County 4-H Member Tobi Drilling.

You can join the 4-H community today. To learn how to become a 4-H member or volunteer leader in Whiteside County, contact Karen Atkinson, Community Worker, 4-H/Youth, at University of Illinois Extension, Whiteside County at 815-772-4075 or katkinso@illinois.edu.

4-H is a community of 6 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. National 4-H Headquarters, which operates out of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is the federal partner of 4-H programs implemented by the Cooperative Extension System of the nation’s 106 land-grant colleges and universities and in local communities through 3,150 county Cooperative Extension offices.
