Single Vehicle Accident Takes Life of Two Atkinson Residents

Whiteside County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident west of Spring Hill on Spring Hill Road, Erie. It was apparent that the vehicle was traveling westbound at a very high rate of speed in foggy conditions. The driver failed to negotiate a curve west of Lyman Road. The vehicle entered the north ditch where it slid uncontrollably before impacting a driveway embankment and then becoming airborne. Once it landed the vehicle proceeded to roll several times until it came to rest on its top. The vehicle then erupted into flames and continued to burn.

The two occupants of the vehicle were still inside and succumbed to the fire. Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald was summoned to the scene and pronounced the occupants deceased.

The two occupants were identified as Wesley A. Stahl, 20 and Karsten J. DeGrave, 20, both of Atkinson.

Erie Fire/EMS, Henry County Sheriff’s Department and Bright’s Auto Body assisted Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
