Every Square is a Masterpiece at Paint the Town 2008

by Sarah Thorndike

The volunteers and sponsors are lined up; the paint is shipped and the t-shirts approved. All that means that Paint the Town 2008 is almost here. Several thousand participants and observers are expected on Morrison’s Main Street on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Beginning at noon on Sept. 20, participants can pick up their event bags at the registration tent at the intersection of Main Street and Base. These bags contain five bottles of paint (red, yellow, blue, black and white) brushes, mixing tray, the PTT 2008 shirt and items from various sponsors.

Registration is $10 in advance and must be received at the Morrison City Building before 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. Registration forms are available on the event website: www.morrisoncapa.org , local schools and the Morrison City Building.

Forms (one form per square, multiple squares require multiple forms and fees) can be returned to Morrison schools prior to Thursday, Sept. 18, Morrison City Building or by mail to one of the addresses on the registration form. Cost on the day of the event is $15 and does not guarantee an event shirt. Extra paint and shirts may be purchased at the Information tent.

While the artists are busy, friends and family can enjoy the entertainment. A number of musical groups and street performers begin at noon and the festivities wind up with the Moonlighting DJ at 9:30. Favorites from past years include the Backwater Bayou band at Main and Madison and street performers Magician Jason Hamilton and Billy the Balloon Guy. New this year will be the Mariachi Cuerdas Mexicanas, a strolling mariachi band, and John Janssen (who has also performed at Morrison’s Farmers’ Market).
