Associate Professor Works On Photojournalism Curriculum

“What did you do on your summer vacation?” is a common question asked at the beginning of each new school year. Ask that question to David Stedwell, an Associate Professor at Ashford University, and he’ll say that he was busy putting the finishing touches on the photojournalism section of a new curriculum for high school yearbook programs.

“My work on the yearbook photojournalism curriculum, which began last year and intensified over the summer, has finally been published and is currently being distributed to high schools across the country,” said Stedwell, who worked with a project manager, graphic designers and an editor from Walsworth Publishing Company to complete the project.

Part of a comprehensive yearbook curriculum titled, “The Yearbook Suite,” the slip-cased printed curriculum book and supplemental CD-ROM provide teacher/advisers and students with learning objectives, background information, handouts, electronic presentations, supplemental reading, class activities and evaluation tools.

“I completed the writing, photo editing and image selection for the book and CD in July,” Stedwell said. Several of his images were also included in the curriculum.

“What a wonderful opportunity this has provided for me to stretch my writing skills and to practice what I teach in my digital imaging, media writing and project management classes,” he said. “It is also gratifying to be able to have my information and instructional materials used by yearbook teachers and students in so many high school classrooms.” Stedwell has been a member of the Ashford University faculty since 2002.
