Karl Miller to Represent Whiteside County at State Fair

The 9th Annual ADM Master Showmanship Contest (MSC) will again bring competitors for a livestock showmanship competition August 6, 2008 at the Illinois State Fair.

Karl Miller, from Prophetstown will represent Whiteside County 4-H. He will be sponsored by WSDR Radio.

More than 45 Illinois youth from around the state will compete in the contest, designed to determine the state’s premier showman. The showmanship contest includes beef, sheep and swine divisions. Participants are selected by winning their county Master Showmanship Contests held during their local fair this summer, and were sponsored by a Farm Broadcaster that is a member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters and the Illinois Farm News Association.

Participants in the 2008 Master Showmanship Contest at the Illinois State Fair supply his or her own livestock for competition. Each exhibitor shows a steer or heifer; a market or breeding lamb; and a market hog or breeding gilt and are judged on their ability to effectively present that animal, and knowledge of the animal’s breeding, age, and weight.

All participants in the state event receive a T-shirt, lawn chair courtesy of RFD Illinois Radio Network and a scholarship of $50. Winners of each the beef, sheep, and swine divisions and the top three overall winners receive scholarships, and additional prizes are offered at both the county and state event.

The ADM Master Showmanship Contest is sponsored by the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, as well as these agricultural organizations: Farm Credit Services, FS/Growmark, Illinois Angus Association, Illinois Beef Association, Illinois Pork Producers Association, Illinois Simmental Association, Illinois State University Agricultural Alumni, Lake Land College, National Swine Registry, Parkland College Ag Department, Show Circuit Magazine, JBS United, University of Illinois Animal Sciences, Kramers Angus, Brownfield Network, and RFD Illinois Radio Network.
