Biodiesel Blend Fuel Standards Set Nationally

Biodiesel advocates, including Illinois soybean growers, are applauding the passage of ASTM specifications for biodiesel blends approved late last week. By setting three sets of biodiesel specifications, ASTM will open the door for greater automaker support and growing consumer demand for biodiesel.

"We are fortunate to have the passage of a specification on blends of biodiesel from 6 to 20 percent,” said David Hartke, chairman of the Illinois Soybean Association and soybean grower from Teutopolis, Ill. “Illinois is the largest consuming state for biodiesel, and we now have quality specifications to back up the fuel.”

The three key ballots voted on by ASTM include changes to the existing B100 biodiesel blend stock specification (ASTM D6751), finished specifications to include up to 5 percent biodiesel (B5) in conventional petroleum diesel (D975) and a new specification for blends between 6 percent biodiesel (B6) and 20 percent biodiesel (B20) for on and off road diesel.

“It is evident that more users and potential users are becoming confident in biodiesel as a fuel product,” said Jonelle Brent, Bureau Chief for the Weights and Measures Division of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “We were pleasantly surprised at the ease at which the specifications passed ASTM last week.”

Automakers and engine manufacturers have waited for the ASTM blend specifications before they could fully support and endorse B20 and lower blends. A number of representatives from oil companies and engine manufacturers sit on the ASTM board and their positive votes reflected their support and confidence in the biodiesel industry.

Illinois Soybean Association is the statewide organization for Illinois soybean farmers. The farmers on its board administer soybean checkoff funds to support research, promotions and educational programs designed to increase demand for Illinois soybeans and administer legislation and membership programs.
