The First Annual Whiteside County 4-H Livestock Judging Contest was held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds. Thirty seven participants of which 19 competed in the Junior Division, 14 years old and under, and 18 individuals competed in the Senior Division, 15 years old and older, judged two classes of beef, two classes of swine, two classes of sheep and one class of goats. At the end of the evaluation of the seven classes the participants, 4-Hers and FFAers, studied there notes and answered fifteen questions, five in each species question class, to complete the competition. The contestants and coaches then enjoyed a pork chop sandwich, chips, cookies and a drink while the results were tabulated. The officials for the day were Whiteside County Livestock Senior Judging Team members Tonja Egan, Karl Miller and Ethan Ward at the end of the day they took the contestants, coaches and volunteers through the classes and informed them of the official results that they came too. The coaches then took their time at going through the classes with their contestants and by that time the results were completed. Wooden picture frames and plaques with engraving were given to the high teams and high individuals and the top five contestants in each species area were given leather coasters representing the species division. The days event went off very well according to Karen Atkinson, Community Worker, 4-H/Youth from the Whiteside County Extension Office. The Whiteside County 4-H Livestock Judging Team Members were group leaders and runners and we had many volunteers assisting with the day, without all of their help with setup the daily routine and tear down this event would not have been possible.
