Gibson and Son Funeral Home Purchased by Bosma-Renkes LTD

Jim Bosma, president of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, signed the final papers today to complete the purchase of the Gibson and Son Funeral Home in Prophetstown. With a local family tradition of 45 years in the funeral service, Bosma-Renkes was uniquely situated to take over the Gibson and Son Funeral Home once the Gibson family decided that it was time to sell.

“When we finally made the decision to sell, we realized that the only person we would trust our families to was Jim,” said Connie Gibson, matriarch of the family. “Jim has always held himself and his funeral homes to the highest standards of integrity, compassion and service.”

“I have always held the Gibson family in high regard,” said Jim Bosma, “and was honored when I received the call that they were interested in talking to me about the sale of their funeral home.

“When someone sells their funeral home, it’s much more than the sale of a business,” Bosma continued. “It is the passing on of a trust that the Gibson family has created and solidified over the years with the people of Prophetstown. I take that responsibility seriously.”

Bosma Funeral Home was established in Fulton, in 1963, when G. James Bosma purchased the Sikkema Funeral Home, which had been established for many years. Within 10 years of acquiring the funeral home, Jim made plans to invest in an entirely new facility for his services. The Fulton Chapel on 10th Avenue was the result. In 1979, James D. Bosma joined his father in the firm and they acquired the Tomlinson Funeral Home in Morrison, which became the Bosma Funeral Home, Morrison Chapel. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Homes was formed January 1, 1987 by the merging of two long established firms in Morrison and Fulton.

Bosma plans to hold a special open house within the next few weeks to honor the Gibson family and to open the newly finished facility in Prophetstown. He asks any of the families in the area who have questions to contact him directly.

“I realize that I still have to earn your trust,” said Bosma. “And I promise to do that, one family at a time.”
