Free Prostate Cancer Screening Available

Prostate Cancer is treatable when caught in its early stages, but by the time its symptoms appear, the cancer may already be more advanced.

“African American men are at highest risk of having prostate cancer. It is also most common in white men, followed by Hispanic and Native American men,” said Joan Saunders, infectious disease, of Whiteside County Health Department.

That’s why annual screenings are important, she said. Whiteside County Health Department is offering free prostate cancer screenings May 20 for men 40 years and over who have no health insurance or high insurance deductibles. The Prostate cancer screenings include free PSA blood tests and prostate education.

“Men should start being screened at age 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer, or otherwise at 50 years old,” Saunders said.

Screening appointments are available from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20. No other free screening dates are planned.

All screenings are by appointment only and will take place at Whiteside County Health Department, 1300 W. 2nd St., Rock Falls.

Funding for the free screenings is provided by CGH Health Foundation.

Call (815) 626-2230, ext. 1232 to make an appointment or for further information.
