March 21, 1924 - March 01, 2008 DR. ALVIN E. HOUSENGA, 83, of 510 12th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, IA. Alvin was born March 21, 1924 in Fulton, IL, to Garrett and Tena (Buikema) Houzenga. He attended rural Whiteside County grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School in 1942. He attended Scovill Business College in Clinton, IA and Sterling, IL. He graduated from Chicago College of Optometry in Chicago, IL in 1950, where he was a member of the Phi Theta Upsilon college fraternity. Alvin was a veteran of WWII, serving, from 1944 to 1946, in the U.S. Army in the 125th Evacuation Hospital, where he received the Good Conduct Medal and the Army Commendation Ribbon. He worked as an optometrist in Morrison, IL; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Galesburg, IL; and Moline, IL. Alvin was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton and Trinity Men’s League. He was a member of the Fulton American Legion Post #402 and also a Gideon and member of the Carroll-Whiteside Camp. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Leota M. Laughlin of Aurora, CO; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Lou Houzenga of Thomson, IL; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leland Houzenga and one niece, Peggy Jean Houzenga.
