Balance Class at Maquoketa YMCA

Many things shift, change, or rearrange themselves as we get older that we have no control over. But losing our sense of balance does not have to be one of them! With awareness, consistent practice, and specific exercises, we can improve our balance.

Starting Monday, March 24th Clinton Community College will lead an 8-week class called N’ Balance at the Maquoketa Area YMCA from 8:30-9:30 a.m. that is specifically designed to address balance issues. Both men and women are encouraged to join the class. The class will meet once a week for eight weeks.

N’ Balance is not a typical exercise class. Participants will learn a progressive skill set where each class builds upon the previous one and mimics movements required for everyday activities. Most of the exercises are seated and options are offered to accommodate every skill level.

The N’Balance program is based on the FallProof program developed by California State University/Fullerton. Strategies to avoid falling, control the center of gravity, improve agility, and gain lower body strength will be taught.

“Unfortunately by the time many people are willing to admit they are having trouble with their balance, they’ve already limited their activities to compensate for their lack of confidence,” said Penny Plautz, certified N’ Balance instructor.

They may have dramatically cut down on their movement and social activities. They may no longer like to go out in public, especially in crowded areas. Fear, specifically fear of falling, becomes one of the biggest issues to overcome. The social support provided by other participants is often one of the biggest benefits of the class.”

Besides the ice and snow that have been a constant hazard this winter, a number of different factors can contribute to loss of stability. Many medications cause dizziness. Household hazards such as slippery floors, throw rugs, and unlit or dark areas, as well as common hazards like cracks in the sidewalk, snow and ice, and uneven surfaces can compromise balance. This class will address the physical factors that help improve balance and increase confidence.

Classes begin Monday, March 24th from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Maquoketa YMCA. The cost of the program is $30. In order to give each participant proper instruction and attention, the class will be limited to 10. Register early to reserve your space.
