Maila Tollstam


December 10, 1968 - February 19, 2008

MAILA A. TOLLSTAM, 39, of 704 11th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, IL.

Maila was born December 10, 1968, in Chicago, IL to Donald F. and Sharon A. (Beckstrom) Tollstam. She was educated in the Fulton grade schools and graduated from Fulton High School in 1987. She graduated Cum Laud from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, with a BS in Education. She married James J. Hand on June 17, 1995 in Fulton. Maila taught school at DS Wentworth Public School in Chicago, IL, and later at Fulton High School, teaching English, Literature and Speech. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton. Maila belonged to ACTA Tae Kwan Do in Clinton, IA where she held a black belt. She assisted with the start up of the speech team at Fulton High School and was the coordinator for the school newspaper and yearbook. She assisted with theatrical summer camps for children in the inner city of Chicago. Maila was a former Fulton Dutch Days Queen and enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband. She loved teaching, and every student was special to her.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; one daughter, Roane Julia Tollstam Hand; her mother and step-father, Sharon and Nick Lung of Leaf River, IL; one sister, Kirsten (Mrs. Terry) Smith of Bloomington, IL; one brother, David (Nancy) Tollstam of Island Lake, IL.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral Information

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 6:30 pm, Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home – Fulton, IL

OFFICIATING: Rev. David Austin, pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church – Fulton, IL

VISITATION: 3:30 pm until the time of the memorial service, Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home – Fulton, IL

INTERMENT: At Maila’s request, her body was donated for medical science

A memorial to the Multiple Sclerosis Society has been established.
