Edward Meurs

EDWARD MEURS, 89, of 228 12th Street, Fulton, IL, died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at his home.

Ed was born July 6, 1918, to Elmer and Nellie (Verhoef) Meurs in Winnie, TX. He was educated in the Long Island, KS schools. He married Lena Post on January 18, 1939 in Ocheyedan, IA. Ed engaged in farming until 1946. He then worked for I.C.A. in Morrison, IL. He later worked for 31 years at General Electric in Morrison, retiring in 1981. He was a former member of the Morrison Christian Reformed Church, and also the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, IL. He was a charter member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, where he served as an elder and Sunday School teacher. He also served as chairman of the church’s building committee when the church was constructed in 1967. Ed was a current member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton. He served on the Unity Christian School Board for 6 years and the Harbor Crest Nursing Home Board of Directors for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife Lena, three daughters, Nancy (Ronald) Shear, Lois (Ronald) Vogel, and Betty (Harlan) Wiebenga, all of Fulton; one son, E. Wayne (Carol) Meurs of Fulton; twelve grandchildren, David (Patricia) Shear, Betsy (Richard) Tubbs, Melinda (James) Wyatt, Duane (Sue) Wierenga, Daniel (Laurie Pierce) Wierenga, Suzanne (Robert) Wierenga-Keller, G. Scott (Angela) Vogel, Jennifer (Brian) Hamilton, James (Karen) Wiebenga, Charles (Erin) Wiebenga, Nicole (Richard) Carter, Matthew (Carolyn) Meurs; thirty three great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; four brothers, Clarence (Alfretta) Meurs of Morrison, IL, Henry and Raymond (Alva) Meurs, both of Fulton, IL, Wayne (Lois) Meurs of Canon City, CO.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Lee Meurs; two grandsons, Greg Alan Meurs in infancy and Rodger Lee Meurs; one sister, Geneva Stuart; one brother, John Meurs.

FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 AM Saturday – February 9, 2008 at the Second Reformed Church – Fulton, IL

CO-OFFICIATING: Rev. Scott Stephan – Pastor: Second Reformed Church – Fulton, IL; Rev. Len Meinema – Pastor: Bethel Christian Reformed Church – Fulton, IL; Pastor Dan Wierenga (Grandson) – Pastor: Garden Plain Presbyterian Church – Fulton, IL

VISITATION: 10:00 AM Saturday – February 9, 2008 at the Second Reformed Church, until time of funeral service.

INTERMENT: Grove Hill Cemetery – Morrison, IL with a Private Family Graveside Service Saturday – February 9, 2008
