Friday Lenten Recitals

The Morrison United Methodist Church again presents its Friday Lenten Recitals, beginning Friday, February 8, 2008, at noon in the church sanctuary. During the six Fridays of Lent, a different musician will perform a thirty-minute program that offers a unique opportunity for Lenten contemplation and reflection. This series of concerts in presented by New Visions: New Directions.

The February 8th recital features pianist Doctor Robert Elfline who is Professor of Music at Augustana College. Pianist Robert Elfline grew up in Morrison and graduated from Morrison High School in 1993. He began studying the piano at age six and by age twelve was accepted into the studio of renowned pianist, Donald Walker, with whom he studied for six years. Dr. Elfline graduated magna cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance. Additionally, he attended graduate school at Rice University in Houston, Texas, graduating with honors with a Masters of Music degree.

Recently, he completed the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, in August of 2007. Currently on the music faculty of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, Dr. Elfline’s teaching duties include, instruction for piano majors, instructions of group piano for non-majors, and instructions in the musicianship and general music sequences. Prior to returning to the Quad Cities, he held teaching positions at Humboldt State University and the University of Cincinnati.

As a performer, Dr. Elfline takes a particular interest in the sonatas of Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert, plus the recent music of American composers. His program will include the music of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, and conclude with American composer William Duckworth.

This dynamic, musical recital presents an opportunity for each listener to hear an artistic performance and a time to pause on Lenten Friday. The concert will be followed by a soup luncheon. There is no charge for the concert; however, free will offering will be taken for the luncheon.

Come, listen, enjoy, and be uplifted by the God’s gift of music.
