The Mustangs came out under the American flag that had flown over Iraq

Mustangs Stampede Crusaders

The weather was gorgeous, but the only thing the Ottawa Marquette Crusaders could see was Red. The Red being the Morrison Mustangs running and throwing to a 35-8 rout at ‘Bud’ Cole Field.

Following the 27-0 win by the Morison Ponies, the Mustangs came out under the American flag that had flown over Iraq and entered their own war zone. The assault began immediately with Nate Vandermyde completing a pass to Dustin Jones for 46 yards down to the Ottawa 22 yard line where Nate McBride carried it in for the touchdown after only 43 seconds had run off the clock. The extra point by Christoph Erber was perfect and the rout began.

The Mustangs struck again on their next possession that started on their own 32 yard line. This series lasted only three plays before Matt Proud broke free over left tackle and stopped 61 yards later in the Mustang end-zone. Erber again split the uprights and the score was 14-0 with 6:42 left in the first quarter.

Ottawa’s next possession was met with negative yardage on the first two plays with tackles behind the line by Adam Cook and Derek Hamstra. The Crusaders were forced to try to find yardage through the air, but their first attempt was intercepted by Nate Vandermyde and returned 57 yards for another Mustang touchdown. Erber’s extra point made it 21-0 with 5:03 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter wasn’t any easier for the visitors as Derek Ward intercepted the second snap of the quarter and returned it up the sidelines for an 83 yard touchdown. Erber’s leg made it 28-0.

Following a Crusader three and punt series, Morrison’s next drive started on its own 26 yard line. The drive was highlighted with a 35 yard pass completion from Vandermyde to Jones and hard running by Tyler Hayes and Nate McBride before Matt Proud carried it in from the 7 yard line to make the score 35-0 with 6:00 minutes left in the half.

The second half was again dominated by the defense with the entire squad receiving valuable experience at the expense of the Crusaders. Reserve Allen Jensen took advantage of his time on the field by exciting the crowd with some hard running and the reserve defense made a statement by containing the Crusader’s offense which eventually penetrated the end-zone with only 6:37 left in the game.

The 2-0 Mustangs will host The Riverdale Rams next Friday with the JV game starting at 5:30.
