5th Grade Colts Open Tourney in Big Way

by Rick O’Shea
Our young men opened play in the I-5 tourney on Sunday, September 25th and represented Morrison very well. Even though the final score doesn't reflect it, the game started off very close. Dixon seemed determined to stop our inside running game. With all their focus on the middle we were able to run wild on the outside. This was evident by the six touchdown runs of no less than 36 yards. Danny Willis started our scoring with a nicely executed counter between the blocks of Connor Duncan and Jesse Bethel. The conversion attempt was no good, making the score Morrison 6, Dixon 0.

Our next score came from the defensive side of the ball. A jarring sack by Nate Pfister knocked the ball loose and was scooped up by Alex Volckman. Thirty-eight yards later Alex was in for the score. The two-point conversion run by Blake Blean was good bringing the score to 14 - 0. With one minute thirty seconds left in the first half, Blake Blean ran in the first of his three touchdowns from forty-eight yards out. Our guards, Calvin Harridge and Nate Pfister did an excellent job all day of getting out in front of our runners and opening holes. The two-point conversion was no good.
With a minute thirty left in the first half and the score Morrison 20, Dixon 0. Our defense took the field and held Dixon giving our offense the ball back with less than a minute to go. Reid Hoffman made a key block to lead Blake Blean around the right end allowing him to run for 49-yard touchdown. The conversion came up short leaving the first half score 26 - 0.
The colts started the second with the ball and wasted little time getting back into then end zone. On the second play from scrimmage Danny Willis led by our pulling guards and tight end Connor Duncan sprinted 65 yards to the end zone. The conversion run by Blake Blean was good making the score 34 - 0.
On our next possession Blake finished his scoring with a 36-yard sweep around the right end. The conversion wasn't good score 40 - 0. At half time we had made many changes to our line-up one of which was moving Blake Blean to quarter back and Phillip O'Shea to halfback. Now it was Blake’s turn to hand off to Phillip for a long touchdown run. 40 yards later Phillip was in for the score, I know the final score was 48-0 but somehow with all the scoring we lost a 2-point conversion. I'm sure I’ll be reminded of it and I'll put it in my next article.
One the defensive side of the ball we were led by Jeremy Caruso with ten assists and one solo tackle. Then Big Jake Green with seven solo tackles. Our defense was prepared and ready to play as usual. WE did give up sixty-two yards and four fist downs. Two of which were by penalty. Everyone saw a lot of playing time and contributed to this win. Andrew Connelly also stripped a Dixon for our second turnover.
