5th Grade Colts Open Season

By Rick O'Shea

Well, it’s football time again and after two successful years at the Pop Warner level the young men got their first taste of Jr. Tackle in a practice game with Sterling Gold on Saturday August 13th.

Blake Blean started the scoring with a sweep around the right end led by guards Calvin Harridge and Nate Pfister for a 47-yard touchdown. Two point conversion failed. Score 6-0.

Morrison next got into the scoring column on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Phillip O’Shea to Andrew Connelly. The two point run by Andrew Connelly was successful and the score was 14-0. They finished the scoring on a 32-yard touchdown run by Blake Blean. Although the end total was 32 yards it seemed like twice as many as Blake ran from one side of the field to the other and broke 5 or 6 tackles on his way to the score.

This proved to be the last score of the game as the conversion was no good. The defense played a very good game giving up only one score in the second quarter to make the final score 20-6.

Offensive numbers: Blake Blean - 4 rushes for 85 yards. Daniel Willis - 3 for 13. Andrew Connelly 2 for 8 and Phillip O’Shea 1 for 4 Passing Phillip O’Shea was 4 attempts 1 completion for 61 yards and 1 touch down Andrew Connelly 1 for 61 - touchdown.

Defensive numbers - Assisted, Solo, QB Sack: Alex Volckman 7 4 1; Nate Pfister 6 4 1; Jeremy Caruso 5 3; Daniel Willis 4 2; Blake Blean 4 1; Calvin Harridge 3 1 2; Travis Keller 2; Reid Hoffman 2; Phillip O’Shea 2; Logan Wilkins 1; Connor Duncan 1; Alex Weeks 1.

The first game of the season August 20th against Amboy had to be rescheduled for Saturday, September 10th at home. They then traveled to Mt. Carroll on August 27th to play a very tough Blackhawk.
Brock Deter proved to be the work horse this game with 12 carries for 55 tough yards.

Blackhawk did a very good job of stopping the sweeps forcing the team to run more inside and pass. Morrison’s only score was set up by a very good 20-yard pass and catch from Blake Blean to Reid Hoffman. Then Brock Deter punched it in for the score. The two point conversion failed and left the score 6-0. Although they only scored one touchdown they had two scores called back because of penalty. Blackhawk was a good team with a good defense but penalties proved to be just as big of an adversary. The defense again played a very big part in our win. Series after series they came up big for the team. Led by Brock Deter with 7 assists 1 solo 2 interceptions, Jeremy Caruso with 10 assists, and Nate Pfister with 7 assists and one solo.

The Morrison 5th grade colts will next be in action Saturday, September 3rd against Sterling Blue at Harry Kid Field in Sterling.
