Dustin and Doug Vandermyde

Dominating the Relays

By: Lindsey Smith
Though they had only planned on running against Newman and Amboy on the 15th, Aston Franklin Center (AFC) joined the Mustangs, Comets, and Clippers. In the end, it didn’t really make much of a difference. AFC would come in 4th of the four teams with 11 points. However, one of the main differences in the meet for the Mustangs was the absence of sprinter and triple jumper Tony Damhoff. Tony’s recovering from an injury he sustained in while running at Fulton. None-the-less the meet had to go on.

The Mustangs won seven races. Three of them were relay where Morrison just edged out Amboy in the last 100-yards. Morrison blew away the competition in the 4 x 100 relay. Sammy coasted into the finish line at 46.08, over two seconds faster than Amboy. Sammy was halped out in the relay by Nick Vandermyde, Zach Ashpole, and Nate McBride.
Nick, Zach, and Nate were back on the track for the 4 x 200. This time their anchor was Doug Vandermyde instead of Sammy. These ‘Stangs cleared Amboy by 3.32 seconds. When Doug crossed the line, the clock showed 1:39.08.
Morrison’s final relay, the 4 x 400 trotted just behind Amboy for the first three legs. Zach Schumacher led the relay off followed by Josh Bartels. Josh passed off to Dustin Vandermyde who proceeded to find Doug at the anchor. Doug passed Amboy on the final 100 sprint to bring Morrison another first place and a time of 3:46.58.
Three of the Mustangs’ other wins came at the feet of Sammy. Sammy won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He also claimed the gold in the 300-meter low hurdles. Sammy won the 100 by finishing in a time of 11.32 seconds. He crossed the finish line 0.3 seconds ahead of teammate Zach Ashpole, who coasted to second. Sammy’s 300 hurdles time stopped at 39.75. He had over six seconds clearance from second place. Sammy’s teammate in this race was Josh. Josh finished the event in 48.10 seconds for fourth place.
Sammy’s final win came with lots of backing from his teammates. While Sammy led the way with a 23.27 time, Zach A. and Nate speed to finish at second and third. Zach’s second place time stopped at 23.80. Nate was just 0.05 seconds behind him.
Nate won an event of his own in the long jump. He took top honors by over seven inches. Nate leaped 19’7 ¾”.
Lewis Selmon finished the meet with a couple of second places. He was Morrison’s distance man by running the one and two mile for the ‘Stangs. In both events he just missed knocking Amboy’s Wells out of first. Lewis’s one mile time froze at 5:18.41, about three and a half seconds off first. He ran the two-mile in a 11:35.36 time, which was his best of the season.
Doug ran the 400 for the Mustangs where he finished in second. Doug’s time of 55.87 was less than a second off of first place.
Joey Amstutz high jumped 5’2” for second place. Third place was two inches below him, while first was two inches above him.
Dustin was the only Mustang to place in the throwing events. He heaved the shot put 36’7 ½” for fifth place.
Morrison rolled into second place in the meet. They finished with 72 points compared to Amboy’s 95, Newman’s 49, and AFC’s 11.
