‘Stangs sprint to fourth in Rosenberry

By: Lindsey Smith
For the second night in a row, the Mustangs were running the track. This time, though, they were competing against everyone in their conference over at Westwood.
The first Mustang points on the board came from freshman Nate McBride in the long jump. Nate was the only Morrison athlete to place in any field event. His 18’11 ¼” jump in the long jump earned him a silver. The first place winner was Ted McMillian, a senior from Erie/Prophetstown. He jumped about ten inches farther than Nate.

Morrison’s first running event points were tallied after the boys’ 4 x 800 relay. Doug Vandermyde led the relay off, followed by Dustin Vandermyde. Dustin passed the baton to Josh Bartels. Josh found Tony Damhoff to anchor the relay at 9:20.86, a second and a half behind Amboy.
Sammy Biggs got his first win of three in the 55-meter dash. He won the race by 0.04 seconds. Sammy’s clock was stopped at 6.53 seconds, exactly 0.30 seconds ahead of one of his teammates. Zach Ashpole reached fifth place in 6.83 seconds.
Lewis Selmon pushed his two-mile pace to finish the race in 11:09.06. Lewis was the fourth two-miler to cross the line, about eight seconds behind third.
Morrison was edged out of the gold by 0.3 seconds in the 4 x 200 relay. Bureau Valley ran to first with their time of 1:38.85. Nick Vandermyde led off the relay before reaching Zach Ashpole. Zach passed the baton to Nate, who handed to Sammy for the anchor. Sammy crossed the line at 11:39.15, 0.18 seconds ahead of Riverdale.
Sammy was back on the track after the mile runners finished. He won the 200-meter dash with 0.32 seconds clearance. Sammy’s sprint ended at 23.84.
Nate, Nick, and Tony joined Sammy for the 4 x 400 meter relay. Tony led off for Morrison. He chased down Nick and gave him the baton. Nick finished his sprint by passing off to Nate. Nate ran the third leg for the ‘Stangs before Sammy anchored. Their time was 3:42.86 giving them first place. The Riverdale team was 1.95 seconds behind them.
Morrison’s points tallied up to 56 by meet’s end, running them to fourth place. The Mustangs were 12 points behind the Erie/Prophetstown Panthers in third. Morrison was followed by Amboy with 32 points.
The ‘Stangs next meet is the 10th Morrison Relays this coming Thursday. The meet is a home boy/girl meet, which starts at 4.
