Nick Vandermyde

Mustangs Ground Missiles and Steamers

By: Lindsey Smith
Not many teams can come close to a team in a track meet when they won ten of the 17 events run. When you add three-second places and five thirds along with two fourth places, it becomes a recipe for a team victory. The Mustangs track team dominated in much of the meet. They had a few events with no boys participating, which momentarily held Morrison from leading in their home meet against Fulton and Milledgeville.

Dustin Vandermyde led the meet off with a win in the high jump. Dustin’s jump of 5’4” was two inches higher than Milledgeville’s jumper in second.
He also threw the discus for the ‘Stangs. There, Dustin tossed the disc 94’2”, landing himself at third.
Tony Damhoff’s only field event was the triple jump. He was the only Morrison triple jumper. Tony sprang to fourth place by hopping 37’8 ½”. He was an inch and a half off of third.
Nate McBride and Zach Ashpole finished the Mustangs’ field events with a 1-3 finish in the long jump. Nate won the event with his 20’3/4” jump. Zach leaped 17’2” for third. He was only two inches from second place.
Lewis Selmon paced Morrison with another first place finish in the 3200-meter run (two miles). Lewis ran his eight laps in 12:31.59, nearly two minutes faster than the second place runner.
The ‘Stangs built on their first running event win in the 4 x 800 relay. They had no competition and ran the relay in 10:05.78.
Morrison also won the next relay, the 4 x 100. The Mustangs cleared both other teams by over two seconds. They stopped the clock at 45.47.
Sammy Biggs led the Morrison charge in the 100-meter dash. Sammy reached the line first in 11.40. Nick Vandermyde raced to third place with his time of 11.98, just 0.09 seconds behind second place. Zach Schumacher also ran the 100. He stopped the clock at 12.14 for fourth place.
Josh Bartels and Max Robertson ran their only individual events of the meet in the 800-meter run. Josh won the race easily. His time of 2:18.05 was over eight seconds faster than second places’. Max came into third place by running his 800 in 2:34.54. Max beat out fifth place by about a second.
The first team to cross the finish line in the 4 x 200 was Morrison. They dusted Fulton and Milledgeville, reaching the line in 1:35.49. That time was well over seven seconds faster than second placed Milledgeville.
A Mustang sweep came in the 400-meter dash. Doug Vandermyde took first place honors when he hit the finish line in 56.48. Zach Schumacher was a step behind him, finishing the race in 56.65. Dustin sprinted the 400 in a time of 57.12 for third. He cleared fourth place by seven seconds.
Lewis hit the track again to run the mile. Of the six runners, Lewis finished the event in 5:31.28 for second place. He missed first by 0.56 seconds.
Morrison capped the meet off by sending two relays to run the 4 x 400. Throughout the first three legs of the relays, each Mustang was neck and neck with the other. However, once the anchors finished, there was a five second time gap. Morrison’s first relay finished in 3:39.15, while the other ran it in 3:44.88.
With 80 points, Morrison won the triangular. Fulton coasted to second with 69.5 points, while Milledgeville finished with 43.5 points.
