Fillies fall in Regional Championship |
By: Lindsey Smith Turnovers, free throws, and fouls were what the Regional Championship game boiled down to. Morrison turned the ball over 15 times in the game, forcing them to play catch up throughout the game. Morrison was also called for 20 fouls, while Rock Falls was called for just 13 of them. This sent the Lady Rockets to the line 25 times. The Fillies would only get to visit nine times. The Fillies went up early in the game, but Rock Falls would answer with nine points. Morrison would’ve been down 9-7 in the first but Amanda “Smiley” Smith got a last second break away lay-up. At the end of the first, the game was tied at nine. Morrison went through a scoring drought in the second quarter. They could score just six times in the second set of eight minutes. Rock Falls tacked up another 12 points, taking a 21-15 point lead at the end of the first half. Morrison got their offense to work a bit more fluently in the third quarter. They hit double-digits with 12. Rock Falls, however, wouldn’t slow on the offensive end. They tacked on 13 more points, opening the lead to seven. Rock Falls’ score was 34 at the end of the third, compared to Morrison’s 27. Jamie Russell would come up big for Rock Falls after early foul trouble. She sparked a 12-2 run for Rock Falls by hitting two corner threes back-to-back. Morrison’s couldn’t completely recover, as Rock Falls put in 18 in the final quarter of play. The Fillies added 12 more before the buzzer sounded. The final score was Rock Falls: 52 to Morrison: 39. Amanda was the only Filly to hit double digits. In her final basketball game as a Filly, the senior scored 12 times. Abby Vock, Michaele Vock, and Heather Andersen each tacked up seven points. Katie Tenboer put up four points, while Kelly Tenboer added two. The Fillies got to the line just nine times. There they made five. (Rock Falls, on the other hand, shot 25 free throws, making 19 of them.) Michaele scored three times off of four free throws. Amanda and Heather hit one of two free throws apiece. Jodi earned one free throw, but it wouldn’t fall. Amanda led the Fillies with steals. She swiped the ball from Rock Falls four times. As a team Morrison recorded seven steals. (Abby 1, Michaele 1, Heather 1) Leading the team in assists was Heather with three. The Fillies assisted a teammate seven times in the game. (Abby 2, Amanda 1, Kelly 1). Not able to get much through the double teams on offense, Heather turned up her defense. She rejected four shots in the game. Other Fillies to block a shot were Jodi and Michaele, each with one apiece. Rock Falls just out rebounded Morrison. The Lady Rockets recorded 24 rebounds (five offensive), while the Fillies pulled down 21 (five offensive). Heather also led the team in this column. She seized eight boards, three of which were on the offensive end. Amanda, Michaele, and Jodi all grabbed three rebounds apiece. Katie snatched two Rock Falls misses. Kelly and Abby each clasped one board. Morrison shot a better percentage from the field than Rock Falls did. The Fillies were 38% from the field, making 16 of their 42 attempts. (Rock Falls 34%, 15 for 44) Morrison hit two three-point baskets of their attempted seven. The Lady Rockets attempted nine from downtown, and they made three of them. The Fillies season ended as they became the 2005 Rock Falls Regional runner-ups. They finished the year with a 20-8 record. Morrison won the Deb Norman Tournament, came in fourth in the Sauk Valley Shootout, and finished in second place in conference. Thanks for everyone’s support. It’s been fun. We’ll miss ya Smiles! WRITERS NOTE: Amanda and Abby participated in the three-point contest before the game. Amanda led all three-point shooters by making 10 of her 15 shots. Abby also advance by tying for second.
