Fillies overcome 10-point hole to win by 12. |
By: Lindsey Smith Kewanee Wethersfield hit the Fillies’ court on Thursday the 3rd, looking to upset Morrison’s “Smiley” Night. (It was supposed to be Senior Night, but Amanda “Smiley” Smith was their only senior.) The Flying Geese flew through the opening quarter, scoring 24 points. Morrison’s offense wasn’t a problem, as they still put in 14 points. The Fillies reduced Wethersfield to just nine in the second while tacking up 15 of their own. Halftime came when the score was Wethersfield 33 to Morrison 29. Morrison continued to tighten up the defense. In the third, Wethersfield could score just two points. The Fillies again added double-digits with 13 points. At the end of the third quarter, Morrison had stolen back the game 42-35. Wethersfield reawakened on offense in the fourth, but not to the extreme that they had hit earlier. The Flying Geese scored 11 points in the final quarter. Morrison, however, still outscored them. The Fillies added 16 points to win the game by 12: 58-46. The Fillies had a fairly balanced attack in scoring. They had six players to score. Abby Vock and Amanda were in double figures, with Abby scoring 17 times, and Amanda at 15. Katie had another good scoring game. She tacked on nine points. Michaele Vock knocked in eight. Jodi Medendorp put in five points. Heather Andersen added four for the Fillies. Morrison stood at a strong 72% at the free throw line as a team. They nailed 18 of their 25 attempts. Heather was 100% from the charity stripe, draining four of four. Abby knocked in four shots of five attempts. Katie hit three free throws after attempting four. Michaele scored four times out of six from the line. Amanda put two shots through, attempting four. Jodi added one of two shooting at the line. Wethersfield shot 69%, making nine of their 13 attempts. Abby and Heather produced an outside inside defensive threat. Each player stole the ball five times from a Flying Goose. (Michaele 2, Amanda 1) Leading the team in assists was Abby. The Fillies had seven assists total in the game, two of which belonged to Abby. (Katie, Jodi, Heather, Michaele, and Amanda one apiece) Michaele and Heather each blocked one shot for Morrison’s two blocks in the game. The Fillies pulled in a whopping 35 rebounds, 15 of which came on the offensive end. Morrison also had a balanced rebounding effort. Amanda and Jodi snatched eight boards. Heather brought in seven rebounds. Katie grabbed six, and Abby clutched five. Michaele caught one miss. While Wethersfield shot 33% (17/51) from the field and 23% (3/13) from downtown, Morrison nailed 17 two-point shots and two three-pointers. The Fillies had a 36% field goal percentage. They were also 40% from behind the arc. 19-6 is where the Fillies record rested for the night. by larryg |
