Fillies on 10 Game win Streak |
By: Lindsey Smith There are rivals in every sport, every league, and every conference. Illinois and Iowa have one, and Morrison and Fulton have one, too. The Fillies hosted the Fulton Lady Steamers for a Saturday night game. The gym was as full as it’s been so far this year, with the exception of the Prince of Peace game. Morrison was going for it’s tenth straight double-digit win, nearing a school record. Fulton, knowing this, wasn’t about to roll over and play dead. The first half was a little shaky at first for the Fillies. They were called on several traveling calls. Fulton was right with Morrison heading to the second quarter. The Fillies had scored 11 while the Steamers hung around with nine points. Morrison shut down Fulton’s offense in the second quarter, holding them to just five points. The Fillies tacked on 14 more to bring their half time lead to 11: 25-14. Throughout the second half, Morrison outscored the Lady Steamers 31 to 26. The Fillies had their lead up to 20 points at one times. Fulton tried to fight back, but Morrison wouldn’t budge…much. The Fillies put in 21 points in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth. By the end of the game, Morrison cleared Fulton by 17 points: 56-39. Michaele Vock continued her hot hand scoring streak by tacking on 21 points. Amanda “Smiley” Smith poured in 14 points. Heather Andersen put in eight, followed by Abby Vock with 7. Jodi Medendorp added six points to Morrison’s total. The Fillies nailed 20 of their 42 shots for 48% field goal shooting. Fulton connected on 15 of their 45 attempts. Morrison hit one three-pointer (Abby). The Lady Steamers shot from downtown ten times, but couldn’t nail any of them. Morrison had more steals than Fulton had field goals. The Fillies stole the ball from the Lady Steamers 16 times. Abby swiped nearly as many balls as points she scored. Abby had six steals. Michaele and Jodi both mugged three Steamers. Heather picked two Fulton pockets. Katie Tenboer and Laura Stralow each had one steal. Recording 10 assists, the Fillies scored 50% of their shots by good passing. Abby also led in this column with four. Jodi and Katie each assisted two teammates. Amanda and Michaele had one assist apiece. Jodi and Katie teamed up again in the blocking stats. Each player had one block. Fulton did a good job of keeping Morrison off of the boards. The Steamers brought in 26 rebounds, 12 of which were offensive. Morrison grabbed 18 rebounds. Six of them were on the offensive end. Heather and Amanda co-led the Fillies with five boards apiece. Jodi snatched four misses, and Katie clasped two rebounds. Michaele and Abby both clutched one rebound. The Fillies records now stand at 15-4 overall and 8-1 with in conference. Tuesday night’s game is Pack the Place night for the Fillies. They’ll be hosting the Newman Lady Comets. Newman is sitting at first place in conference, while Morrison is right behind them in second. This is a big game for both teams (sophomore and Varsity for Newman and Morrison). You could call it the conference championship, if you’d like, at the Varsity level. That’s what it may end up being, if there are no more upsets with in conference. Other games this week include a game on Thursday. This game is against Morrison’s other conference rival, the Prophetstown Lady Prophets. P-town is marked at third place within conference play at the Varsity level. The sophomore game should also be a good one, too, as it is a big game for them. This game is a home game, one of only a few remaining. On Saturday, the Fillies will be traveling over to Fulton to take on the Lady Steamers for the second time. All the games above start at 6 o’clock, with the sophomores holding down the court first. Varsity follows the game, approximately at 7:30. by larryg |
