F/S Fillies Win Second O.T. in a Row |
By: Lindsey Smith After an intense overtime win against Bureau Valley, the sophomore Fillies had to collect themselves, and play as a team, on both ends of the court, to go for their third win in row. The girls’ looked as though they were going to do just that in the first. The Fillies went up 8-0 in the beginning of the game. Fulton scored four points before quarters’ end, and the Fillies added seven more. Ashlie Patten had nine of Morrison’s points, off of two two-point baskets and a three-pointer. Morrison cooled down a lot in the second. They could score just four times, half of those coming from the free throw line. Turnovers would plague them until the fourth quarter. Fulton couldn’t get hot either. They scored six points, four coming from out-of-bounds plays. At the half, the Fillies were still up by nine points: 19-10. Still struggling from the field, Morrison made two field goals in the third for a quarter total of four points again. The girls couldn’t get to the line, though Fulton was setting themselves up for foul trouble in the fourth. In the meantime, the Lady Steamers proceeded to add nine more points, making it a four points game. Morrison led: 23-19. The fourth quarter was a scoring frenzy for both teams. Fulton threw down 17 points. Tara VanZuiden and the basket were clicking for Fulton. She scored eight of the Steamers fourth quarter points. The Fillies had five players score within the final seven minutes. The scoring was even throughout the five. They totaled to score 13 points in the fourth. Morrison was 7 of 12 from the charity stripe, while Fulton was 5 for 11. Kelly Tenboer again saved the game for the Fillies with free throws. Kelly’s fourth quarter free throws kept Morrison and Fulton playing tag with the score until finally the buzzer sounded and the game was tied at 36. The Fillies went to overtime for the second time in two days. Once in overtime, the Fillies seemed to relax a little. They got the ball into Jessica Scott for four points off of two screen and rolls. Ashlie added two more points and Kelly knocked in a free throw. The free throw was again huge. At the times, the score was 42-41, Morrison. Kelly’s point made it much harder for Fulton to win the game, though they could still tie it. The Fillies turned up the defense during the final seconds of play. They forced a jump ball, which wasted some time for Fulton. With five seconds to go, Fulton got to run an inbounds play, but with no prevail. Though Fulton got three close shots off of that inbounds, they couldn’t get them to fall. The Fillies got their second overtime win in a row. The final score was 43-41. Ashlie drained 16 points for Morrison to lead both teams in scoring. Jessica put in 10 points off of five field goals. Kelly tacked on nine more. Lindsey Smith hit two shots for two points. Brianne Janssen pitched in three, while Megan Nelson added one point off of a free throw. Morrison had six players score, but Fulton got everyone involved. They had nine players score. Morrison was caught on 18 fouls. It cost them a player, but not the game (almost did though). The Fillies sent the Lady Steamers to the line 21 times. However, Fulton could only make eight of them. Morrison got to the line 18 times, and scored on 10 of them. Ashlie had the best free throw percentage. She was 75% at the stripe, making three of her four shots. Brianne and Megan both drained one of their two charity attempts. Kelly made it to the line ten times and knocked in five. Morrison record is now set at 9-10 overall and 5-4 in conference. The Fillies next game is on Tuesday the 25th. They’ll be playing host to Newman. In the last meeting, the Fillies were right with the Lady Comets until the last minute. This game is set to start at 6 o’clock. Varsity will follow at about 7:30. This PACK THE PLACE game is huge for both teams. Two days later on Thursday the 27th, the Fillies will take on the Lady Prophets of Prophetstown. This is bound to be a good game for both the sophomore and the Varsity level, due to the rivalry between the two teams. Tip off is also 6 o’clock for the sophomores and around 7:30 for Varsity. by larryg |
