Nine and Counting

By: Lindsey Smith
Waiting, again, for the sophomore team to win in overtime against the Bureau Valley team, the Varsity Fillies were looking at extending their winning streak to nine games in a row. All nine of these games have been won by double digits. The last time these two teams met, the Fillies won by a score of 55-36.

Bureau Valley didn’t want to return to that game and it showed, at least in the first quarter. The Storm opened the game by outscoring the Fillies 10-11. This was the only quarter B.V. would outscore Morrison.
The Fillies tightened up a few bolts and screws on both ends of the court in the second quarter. There they held B.V. to just six points. Morrison proceeded to add on 14 points to retake the lead. At half time, the Fillies were up by seven: 24-17.
Coming out of the locker rooms for the third quarter, the Fillies tacked on 13 more points to open their lead to double digits. Bureau Valley got to double digits again, dropping 10 points through. By the end of the third quarter, the score was Morrison: 37 to Bureau Valley: 27.
The Storm tried to make it a game in the fourth. They almost succeeded, but fouls gave them fits. The Fillies scored the last three points off of three of four free throw shooting to pull the game out of B.V.’s reach. Morrison outscored Bureau Valley 14-13 within the last eight minutes of play. Morrison’s victory margin was 11 points. This gave the Fillies their ninth win in a row by double figures. The final score was 51-40.
The Vock sisters, Abby and Michaele, led the Fillies in scoring. Both of them scored 13 times. Michaele made the only three pointer in the game by either team. Amanda “Smiley” Smith followed knocking in 11 points. Katie Tenboer was also in double figures tacking up 10. Jodi Medendorp and Heather Andersen added two points apiece.
Though the Storm fouled more, they still got to the line about as many times as the Fillies did. Morrison was called on 14 fouls, while B.V. had 20. Bureau Valley scored on ten of their 15 tries. The Fillies put in 10 of the 18 attempts that they took. Michaele was the only Filly to make 100% of her free throws. She nailed both of her shots. Katie drained four free throws after attempting six. Abby hit three shots out of five. Amanda knocked in one of her four shots at the charity stripe. Jodi got to the line once, but couldn’t score on it.
Making 20 of their 44 field goals, the Fillies shot 45%. B.V. hit 15 of the 43 shots they attempted. The Storm were 0 for 6 from downtown, while the Fillies hit one in three tries.
Morrison stole the ball from B.V. eight times. Abby led with three swipes. Michaele stole two balls. Jodi, Amanda, and Heather mugged one Storm player each.
Michaele headed the team in the assists column also with three. Jodi assisted two teammates. Heather and Abby had two assists each. As a team, the Fillies recorded seven assists.
In the blocks column, Jodi led with two. Katie also rejected one shot.
Recording a double double, Michaele also led Morrison in rebounding. She grabbed 13 rebounds. Katie snatched five boards. Abby and Jodi each clutched three misses. Amanda and Heather both seized two rebounds. Morrison and Bureau Valley tied in rebounding. Both teams clasped 28 boards. The Fillies recorded 10 offensive boards, while the Storm had 11.
The Fillies move their record up to 14-4 overall and 7-1 in conference. Morrison is on a nine game win streak now. All of those games they have won by double digits.
