Fillies drown the Lady Clippers.

By: Lindsey Smith
Off to a great season already this year, the Fillies weren’t about to let up when Amboy came to town. The Amboy Lady Clippers have pulled off their fair share of upsets within the conference this year. They’ve upset the Lady Cardinals of Erie, the Storm from Bureau Valley, and Fulton’s Lady Steamers so far this season. Both teams came into the game on a four-game winning streak. But, by the end of the game, the Fillies rolled over the Clippers. Amboy became Morrison’s second team in the season that they’ve pulled the 30-point running clock rule on.

The Fillies racked up the scoreboard in the first quarter. They scored 20 points and allowed Amboy just six. Katie Tenboer scored all five of her points in the first. To end this quarter the Fillies went on a 14-2 run.
In the second quarter the Fillies got the most Amboy offense of the night. The Lady Clippers scored nine in the quarter, but they couldn’t pull the Fillies down to single digits. Morrison put in another 14 points, bringing their halftime total to 34, and Amboy 15.
Morrison came back with another hot quarter in the third. Amboy scored first, but the Fillies drilled in 18 points before the end of the quarter. They made three 3-pointers in their second 14-2 run of the night. Abby Vock hit one of those threes at the buzzer to give the Fillies a 31-point lead. Because Morrison was ahead by over 30 points, the rest of the game would be a running clock. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Morrison: 52, Amboy 21.
The fourth quarter was very low scoring. Both teams scored just four times. Morrison scored the first four points, and then Amboy closed out the game with their final four points. The Fillies won this game by 31 points, at a score of 56-25.
Michaele Vock was the game-leading scorer. She knocked in 14 points, eight of those coming from the free throw line. Amanda “Smiley” Smith followed one point behind, adding 13 more for Morrison. Amanda had one of Morrison’s three 3-pointers in the game. Abby raked in 12 points, half of those coming from behind the arc. Jodi Medendorp scored 8 times, followed by Katie with five. Heather Andersen wrapped up the Filly scoring by putting in four more.
Morrison made 20 of the 40 shots that they took for an even 50% field goal percentage. The Fillies were also 60% from downtown, hitting three of their five attempts. Amboy, on the other hand, shot 25% from the field, making 11 out of their 44 shots. The Lady Clippers shot 10 three points in the game, but couldn’t get any of them to fall.
Drawing 16 fouls off of Amboy, the Fillies got to the free throw stripe 18 times. They capitalized on 13 of them. (Amboy coaxed 12 fouls from the Fillies. The Clippers scored on three of their eight free throws.) Abby and Amanda both drained the two free throws that they earned. Michaele was the hot hand at the line throughout the game. She knocked in 8 of 10 free throw attempts. Katie earned herself three shots from the stripe and scored on one of them. Jodi made it to the line on a chance for a three-point play, but couldn’t get the free throw to fall.
Though the Fillies had nine turnovers in the game, they stole the ball back seven times. Erica Sanchez, Michaele, and Amanda each swiped a Clipper twice. Heather picked one Amboy pocket.
Leading the team in assists was Abby with two of them. Katie set up a teammate once.
The Fillies had three blocks in their 32 minutes of play. Jodi rejected two shots, while Katie blocked another.
Morrison out rebounded the Lady Clippers 26-20. Amboy grabbed two offensive boards, but Morrison tripled them and snatched six. Jodi led the team on the boards, gripping eight. The Vock sisters, Michaele and Abby, each clasped four rebounds. Katie skied for three misses. Heather and Erica clutched two boards apiece. Amanda rounded out the rebounds with one.
The Fillies improved their record to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in conference. Morrison will next be playing on Friday, the 21st, in Bureau Valley. The Fillies’ next home game is set for Saturday the 22nd, when Morrison will be taking on Fulton’s Lady Steamers for the first time this year.
The games in the week of the 24th of January are huge games for the Fillies. On Tuesday, the 25th, the Fillies will be playing in one of their biggest games this season. The Lady Comets from Newman will be hitting the Fillies’ court. This game is the Pack the Place Night for Morrison. The conference championship is on the line for both teams. (If there are no more upsets this season.)
Then, two days later, Morrison will be hosting the Lady Prophets of Prophetstown. The Varsity Lady Prophets are looking for revenge from the previous three-point loss to the Fillies. The Sophomore Fillies team is looking a little revenge themselves. The Fillies and the Lady Prophets have an ongoing rivalry, so this game is also a huge game, and should be very exciting. All the games above start with the Fresh/Soph team seizing the court first at 6 o’clock. The Varsity team will follow at about 7:30. These are huge games for both teams so we hope to see all of you there!
