Mike Britt Electric flips the OFF switch after 19 years |
|
“My very first electrical project was my most unique in my 19 years of business”, stated Mike Britt, Owner of Mike Britt Electric of Morrison. “The house was designed by Morrison Institute of Technology drafting instructor Brian Bennett and was cylindrical in nature, I don’t think I have ever worked on such an interesting project since!”. Mike announced he is closing his electrical business effective January 1, 2006 which interestingly is exactly 19 years to the day since he started on January 1, 1987. “I learned a lot while working at Yarbrough Electric in the 4 years 1974 to 1979,” said Mike. He opened a downtown Morrison bar named “Palsies’s” in 1978 and tried that for a few years prior to starting the electric business. Mike is most appreciative of his learning experiences while working for Yarbrough and the support he received in getting started. Asked what may have been the most unusual job Mike reminisced, “I remember getting a call from an elderly couple complaining their power was interrupted occasionally and would I look at their electrical lines. When I arrived at the house everything seemed in working order other than all wiring was the old porcelain knob and two wire so much in use a long time ago. While in the basement I heard funny crackling noises but couldn’t see anything unusual. I turned off the basement lights and my eyes got bigger to see the light show in the dark as sparks were flying between the wires in places where the insulation was wearing off. That really kind of scared me to think old house wiring could be that dangerous”. Mike said he ended up rewiring the entire house. Mike took his electrical business to Morrison, Fulton all points in between and close to Morrison and as far away as Byron, Illinois. Wiring corn bins, to new condominiums was in the items accomplished list for his company over the last 19 years. “I have so many great customers it is very difficult for me to just say goodbye to them,” says Mike. He says he may have well over a thousand customers served. Mike’s wife Ann, who was responsible for the added personal touch on the company van with a likeness of Mike states “gosh, he’s going to be home more often!…..darn!” We are not sure what that means however we do know Ann and Mike were a team when it came to operating and managing this successful small business in Morrison for so many years. Mike is going to work at the new WalMart Distribution Center in Rock Falls and he starts his new job in the maintenance department effective January 2, 2006. Mike wishes to say “thank you to all of my hundreds of great customers who supported me,” and added, “I will see you on the golf course!” by Editor, theCity1.com |
