Southside Students to Perform at Morrison’s Heritage Museum |
|
Everyone enjoys beautiful Christmas decorations, warmth, and good company on their walk through town during the festive Christmas Walk. As part of these hometown activities Thursday, December 1, Morrison’s Heritage Museum will host a select group of fourth and fifth grade music students. The Southside students will play nine holiday carols on recorders in the cozy Hearth Room from 7:30 to 7:45 P.M. Recorders originated in medieval times and became most popular during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The famous German composer Johann Sebastian Bach wrote chamber music specifically for recorders. The students’ instruments are authentic replicas with eight holes. Air is blown into one end, rather than across a mouthpiece, as with a flute. Recorders produce warm, mellow tones. Band students were required to audition for this performance ensemble, and twelve boys and girls were chosen. Their director is Cynthia Perrizo, elementary music teacher. The public is encouraged to attend this free concert of traditional music at Morrison’s Heritage Museum, where the history of Morrison is always on display. by Stephanie A. Vavra, Guest Columnist |
