Illinois-Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Symposium

University of Illinois Extension and Iowa State University Extension will again be presenting an afternoon symposium for commercial growers involved in fruit and vegetable production. This program will be offered on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at the Iowa State University Scott County Extension Office, Cyclone Room, 875 Tanglefoot Lane, Bettendorf, Iowa. Bettendorf is one of the Quad Cities located along both sides of the Mississippi River in North Western Illinois and is easily accessible by major interstate travel.

Specialists will again be presenting the latest research from Iowa State University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Topics will include: "Drought: Where Are We, Where are we Going" by Ray Wolf, "Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program" by Randy Madsen, "Frost Protection Methods in Fruits and Nuts" Dr. Paul Domoto, "Integrating New Insecticides into Apple Pest Management Programs" by Dr. Rick Weinzeirl, "Potential for Growing Raspberries and Blackberries" by Dr. Paul Domoto, "Sweet Corn Cultivars and Weed Management" by Vince Lawson, "Irrigation Scheduling" by Hank Taber, "Chestnut Production and Marketing in the Upper Midwest" by Tom Wahl, "Effectiveness of Admire and Other Insecticides for Insect Management in Cucurbits" by Dr. Rick Weinzeirl, and "Weed Control and Cleaner Pumpkins with Cover Crop Mulch" by Dr. Maurice Ogutu.

The conference will begin with registration at 12:30 p.m., with the general session beginning at 1:00 p.m. Following the general session, concurrent sessions will be presented - one for vegetables and one for fruit. Time has been made available for growers to visit with speakers and other growers. Pre-registration is required. The cost for the entire symposium is $25.00 for the first person from farm or business. Discounts for two or more people participating from the same farm or business are available.
