Local Kids Place At Illinois Junior Iron Chef Contest

The top three winners of the Whiteside County Kids-Only Cook-off, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension, went on to compete in the Illinois Jr. Chef Contest at KIDFEST-Chicago on October 15. They prepared Zachary Champagne's winning recipe, "Raspberry Fruit Salad," live on-stage against three other finalists (grades 6-9) from across the State of Illinois.

The kids did a fantastic job and initially placed 3rd, with only 1 point separating 2nd and 3rd place! However, it was learned later that a judges’ arithmetic error had cost the team 10 points, resulting in a second or possibly even a first-place score. (Carrying a one to the tens place can really change things in real life kids!)

Congratulations to the team: Zachary Champagne (Age 12), Rachel Nelson (Age 11), and Michael Oldenburg (Age 12). To learn more about community activities sponsored by Extension, visit www.extension.uiuc.edu/whiteside. To learn more about KIDSFEST-Chicago visit Kids Eat Well.
